PCOS
(POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) isn’t just about ovaries—it’s a whole-body condition that affects hormones, metabolism, skin, mood, and more.

 What Is PCOS?

PCOS is a hormonal imbalance where the ovaries may produce excess androgens (male hormones), leading to:

  • Irregular or absent periods

  • Acne and oily skin

  • Excess facial/body hair (hirsutism)

  • Hair thinning on the scalp

  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Dark patches on skin (especially neck, armpits)

  • Mood swings, anxiety, or depression

  • Fertility challenges

Not everyone has all symptoms—and that’s okay. PCOS looks different on every body.

 What Causes PCOS?

The exact cause isn’t known, but it’s linked to:

  • Insulin resistance: Your body struggles to use insulin properly, which can lead to weight gain and cravings.

  • Genetics: If your mom, aunt, or sister has it, you might too.

  • Inflammation: Chronic low-grade inflammation may play a role.

 Managing PCOS: You’ve Got Options

  • Balanced nutrition: Think fiber, protein, healthy fats, and low-glycemic carbs.

  • Exercise: Gentle exercise like walking, yoga, or dancing supports insulin sensitivity.

  • Sleep & stress management: Prioritize rest and find your chill—your hormones will thank you.

  • Medical support: Birth control pills, metformin, inositol or other treatments may be recommended.

Myths:

  • “PCOS means you can’t get pregnant.” → False. Many people with PCOS conceive with or Without support.

  • “It’s just a cosmetic issue.” → FALSE  It affects metabolism, mood, and long-term health.
